Dear
Esteemed Alumni and Friends,
I would like to invite you to the first Annual College of
Engineering Northern California Pau Hana Reception. The
University of Hawai`i and the University of Hawai`i College
of Engineering are proud of its alumni, many of whom are
employed by industry partners in Northern California and
have thereby brought honor and prestige to our state ad
the university.
As we look back on the past year and look forward to the
next, I would like to share with you the progress that the
College of Engineering continues to make in recruiting and
attracting high quality students, bringing research dollars,
conducting world class research and teaching, and promoting
and raising support for the college.
First, I am happy to report that for Fall 2001 overall college
enrollment is up 6%, and first time freshman enrollment
is up about 18%. On the whole, the number of students in
the college has increased to 724 with 560 undergraduates
and 164 graduates now in our programs. At the same time,
research dollars in the college continue to grow with a
total of $5.6 million in sponsored research for fiscal year
2000. That compares to $2.2 million for 1999. At the April
25th banquet - COE: Your Partner in a New Millennium, we
celebrated the numerous successes of the College with our
local alumni and industry partners. It is my hope that we
make this an annual event. Donations to the College are
up from $550,000 for fiscal year 1999-2000 to $1.1 million
for fiscal year 2000-2001.
We are responding to the high demand for engineers from
Hawai`i tech companies. The Hawai`i Center for Advanced
Communications is a good example of college activities that
are providing first-rate education in the hot area of wireless
markets while also building ties and providing talents for
the local industry that directly benefit our students.
As many of you know, there was a significant leadership
change at the UH administration this year. With our new
president, Evan Dobelle, at the helm, the university has
embarked on a strategy planning process that I anticipate
will mean a new direction for much of the campus, including
the COE.
This Pau Hana reception will not only give you an opportunity
to become more up to date with the University and the College,
but also to reunite with classmates in a fun and relaxing
atmosphere. Please join us.
With Much Aloha,
Wai Fah Chen
Dean, College of Engineering University of Hawai`i
