The Five Star Aloha Gala

Kūlia I Ka Nuʻu was the favorite saying of the late Queen Kapiʻolani of Hawaiʻi and literally translated means “Strive to Reach the Summit.”  The Hawaiʻi Chamber of Commerce of Northern California (“HCCNC”) founded and based in San Francisco, bestows this award upon persons and organizations who promote the culture and capabilities of Hawaiʻi beyond its island shores.  Past awardees include former University of Hawaiʻi women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji; Wally Yonamine (a former San Francisco 49er and the first Asian American to play professional football); Chefs Sam Choy, Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong; The Brothers Cazimero, Bernard Osher Foundation President Mary Bitterman, Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakane, and others who have blazed trails for the global Hawaiian community.

The award is bestowed together with several scholarships for Hawaiʻi students attending San Francisco Bay Area colleges and who demonstrate the willingness and potential to be future leaders of the larger Hawaiian Community, back in Hawaiʻi and beyond its shores. To date, 31 are recipients of our HCCNC scholarship.

We are pleased to announce that the 2018 Five Star Aloha Gala will honor Nainoa Thompson from the Polynesian Voyaging Society and Hōkūleʻa.

Proceeds from our Five Star Aloha Gala will benefit the Kūlia I Ka Nu'u Scholarship Program. Each year, the HCCNC Foundation grants scholarships to deserving students from Hawaii or the Bay Area pursuing their college educations in Northern California. It is our way to help develop the 50th State's future leaders & further strengthen the bridge between Hawaii and Northern California.

We appreciate your support and contribution to our Silent Auction and Raffle programs at the gala. Your support would be greatly appreciated and allow us to continue to provide scholarships to deserving students. If you'd like to make a direct donation to the HCCNC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, please contact us. Please consult your tax professional about the deductibility of your donation.
