2016 Scholarship Recipients

The goal of the HCCNC Scholarship Program is to support student leaders as role models for the Hawai‘i community. The Scholarship Program is aimed at strengthening the pipeline of Bay Area college-bound students and ensuring retention so that more students obtain their degrees. We seek to support qualified kama‘āina, and assist them in making the transition from high school to college, and from Hawai‘i to the mainland.

This year we are pleased to support three outstanding students! Congratulations to Jackie Chan, Kylie Chun, and Thomas Hayashi, recipients of 2016 HCCNC Scholarships!

jackie chan

Jackie Chan, a 2014 graduate of Roosevelt High School, is currently a sophomore at Stanford University. Hoping to attend medical school upon graduation, he is currently pursuing a major in Biological Chemistry and a minor in Human Biology. In his free time, Jackie enjoys biking around Palo Alto, reading, interacting with children, and relaxing with both family and friends. His love for working with children coupled with having had his fair share of injuries as a multi-sport athlete in high school has inspired him to pursue a career in Pediatric Sports Medicine. Ultimately, he hopes to return home to Hawaiʻi where he can use his experience to benefit the keiki in Hawaiʻi. He is truly thankful to HCCNC for helping him achieve his goals.

kylie chun

Kylie Chun was born in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi and graduated from Punahou School in 2013. She is currently a junior at Santa Clara University studying accounting in the Leavey School of Business. In her free time, she enjoys running, playing soccer and volunteering in the community. After graduating from Santa Clara, Kylie hopes to work for a national public accounting firm where she will gain a more thorough understanding of the business process. In the future, Kylie wants to help the Hawaiʻi business community continue to progress with sustainable efforts. She hopes to use the skills she has developed and the knowledge she has gained from living in a dynamic place such as San Jose to become an effective business leader in Hawaiʻi.

thomas hayashi

Thomas Hayashi was born and raised on Maui. He is a 2016 graduate of Seabury Hall and a member of the Cum Laude Society. He was an avid participant in the school’s student government, philosophy club and varsity football team. Thomas has had a variety of extra circular experiences including playing Taiko with Maui Taiko for 5 years, participating in the Schatz Seniors Internship program for U.S. Senator Brian Schatz and travelling to the People’s Republic of China on a mission trip to teach English. Thomas also spoke at and helped with the TedxYouth@SeaburyHall event over the course of its last three years. Thomas prioritizes service and giving back to the community and recognizes that the only way to guarantee a future is for the world to become more sustainable. Thomas plans to get a philosophy and environmental science degree at Santa Clara University with the long term goal of becoming an environmental lawyer. He hopes to one day return to Hawaiʻi and guarantee the protection of its natural beauty.
